Masakhane is geared to take full advantage of the powers of the internet with its newly acquired staffroom software. This computer tool will assist teachers in managing learner data and the interaction with parents.
Masakhane and Green Curtains teachers are taking advantage of the excitement in the air to feature the World Cup in the classrooms this month. With the World Cup being hosted by South Africa, poor communities are able to share in the experience of international football teams and their fans all visiting the country at once.
The Masakhane Educare has 2 registered Grade R classes, funded by the Western Cape Department of Education. We have 40 Grade R children who will go to school next year.
Masakhane Educare is one of approximately 28 educare centres in Masiphumelele and Ocean View, which provide early learning opportunities for children in these two communities.
In the early 1990s when the Noordhoek squatter area was still an illegal settlement, Valley Development Projects (VDP), an NGO operating in the community, established places of care using the local residents as staff. Initially Masakhane operated from Winnie Tsotso's shack, which was soon replaced by a corrugated iron structure and old shipping containers.
