Masakhane

Masakhane is one of 28 pre-school creches in Masiphumelele and Ocean View which cater for the children of working parents who live in these communities. In 2001, Herbie Eichel, owner of The Galley on Fish Hoek Beach was distressed by what he saw in Masiphumelele, particularly the lack of pre-school and day-care facilities for all the children left behind when their parents left for work each day. Being the compassionate, proactive man he is, Herbie decided to do something. It took him a while but he put a plan together which was implemented in June 2004.

Green Curtains

About 14 years ago, residents of Atlantic Heights, an informal settlement in Ocean View, joined forces and created a preschool creche to look after their young children so that their parents could go off to work safe in the knowledge that their children were being well looked after. With the support of the Valley Development Project (VDP), some 40 children are fed, given lessons and cared for every day. The children each receive a cooked breakfast and lunch courtesy of the VDP and prepared by Roslene Jacobs.
